Probistip

Probistip is a town in the Republic of Macedonia, seat of the Probistip municipality.

Probistip is nestled in the southwest corner of the Osogovo Mountains, in northeastern Macedonia. The region has been well-known since Roman times for its mineral wealth and mining industry, which flourished during Yugoslav times. It has a long tradition of hearty country eating, and is close to both the stunning Monastery of Gabriel Lesnovski (dedicated to St.Archangel Michael and St.Gavril Lesnovski) and the unearthly stone formations of Kuklica. The mines of Zletovo give most of the natural materials that are processed in Probistip.

The municipality borders Kratovo municipality in the north, Kocani and Cesinovo-Oblesevo in the east, Sveti Nikole in the west, Stip and Karbinci in the south.

The Municipality spreads over the middle and lower part of the line of Zletovska River. By the 2003 territorial division of Macedonia, the rural Zletovo municipality was attached to Probistip municipality. The present municipality has 16,193 inhabitants. The municipality of Probistip had 12,963 inhabitants in 1994 and 12,765 at the census of 2002. Zletovo municipality had 3,687 inhabitants in 1994 and 3,428 in 2002.
